Episode I: Aurora's Tasting

envelope box storage

needed to get some storage boxes for my laundry closets... a lot of space to fill but me just cramming things onto shelves wasn't helping my sanity any.

Just finished stuffing a gazillion (1,250 to be exact) envelopes for an upcoming event so I have quite a few envelope boxes sitting around.

Transformed them slightly with a few trimmed scrap booking sheets (12x12) which I bought a long time ago on sale for $0.05 each. I used mod podge to adhere them and then did a light layer over the top. Finished the edges using duct tape. I only did the corners and the bottom because I was worried if I did the top the lids wouldn't fit anymore. It would be cute to finish off the tops as well, but I didn't want to get too involved in the project. This only took me a 1/2 hour to do all of these.

a few small paynes

just a couple of notes before the big drama entry (just fun and games, nothing to worry about).

I've been awaiting Max Payne to come out on DVD. While I did want to see it in the movie theatre I managed to NOT imagine it was going to be as wonderful as I hoped. so we waited for the home release, which was Tuesday.

I very much enjoy Marky Mark - as I think most of you know, or at least could guess - and he has managed to turn some movies which I thought couldn't possibly be good or interesting into both. He played a good Max Payne, but I don't think he had enough to work with either in the plot or script. It reminded me a bit of the second Bourne, where Damon doesn't talk a whole lot but does make a lot of contorted facial expressions.

The story line - which from the video, is pretty kick ass - was not so kick ass in this movie. I'm not sure what I was expectig them to do with the existing story, but it was all very predictable and boring. From the first moment the true bad guy showed up on screen he was easily pegged as the orchestrator of all Max's horrible past. I don't think they made Max as bad ass as he really is and the INTERESTING Action, which resembled the game, only lasted MAYBE five minutes. And of course their poor plot looked like it borrowed scenes from a MUY KICK ASS movie (Constantine) with no explanation and no rhyme or reasong except they thought it looked cool in that other movie with demons.

And they ended it horribly.. the ending where you can see the dollar signs in the producers eyes as they grasp tightly to the idea their movie will do so well they have to leave a place for a sequel. It doesn't deserve a sequel (unless they promise to make Max as bad ass as possible); plus, I doubt it did well enough to rate a sequel which means they've just left poor Max still horribly miserable.

Anyway. Eddie asked me to rank it and it gets a 4, maybe I did have my hopes up too far. Eddie ranked it a 5 (and didn't know the back story before hand).

On to other things...

Aurora is still in love with school. so much so that when I arrived yesterday to pick her up she showed me a picture she taped on the wall and immediately stated, "It's NOT for you," and led me away. The cute, younger (but very talkative boy) in her class soon got my attention to show me the picture HE drew and posted above hers that WAS for HIS mom. So at least someone loves their parents more than daycare.

We had a fun family cooking session last night (equals drama I mentioned before) and video is coming (sometime before Monday, I hope).

I am still slowly (and slowly because Darwin's attention to detail deserves my attention to detail) reading Voyage... and still falling in love with Darwin. Why is it always the dead geniuses I love?

Preschool

Yesterday was Aurora's first time at Preschool. We walked into the dining area and showed her how to grab her tray so she could eat breakfast...
and as the kids got up from the table, because they had finished almost as soon as she sat down, i quickly reminded her that she may join them as soon as she had eaten her food all gone.

Aurora wasn't bothering to look at me. She was focused so intently on those small beings. She says the word with reverence, "kids". And I know in her mind she wishing she could uncoil her strength like a pouncing tiger and play with them. And as I'm staring at her starting at them she breaks from her daydream and turns to me, "You don't stay. You go to work."

And with a sigh that was part bitterness and part relief, I leaned down to kiss her goodbye.

Mini "Craft"

Putting something together to send to Stella... hoping to encourage her to write to us :) or color, or anything. So I've just gathered a few sheets of paper from different reams of paper I have (most from the dollar store) and I have a ton of blank envelopes. #10 are most common and would probably be easiest to use.. but I had these around so I colored something on the back of each one to make it a little more fun.

Obviously this technique could be stepped up a bit with stamping, sketching, etc. but for a child I think this is fine. I may attempt putting together some samples for "adult" letter kit later.

The weekend

Last night started my Mary Kay fest - and even though I'm in the process of selling every possible item I have in stock I must admit I love seeing it all lying on the table. It's all so pretty.

Spent a little time with the friends that stopped by last night and then dropped into our normal routine of playtime, tubbers and bedtime. I've begun The Voyage of the Beagle and read for an half hour or so before dropping into bed exhausted.

And then the word that can cut through any sleep/dream induced haze, "MOM!" and then the wrenching open of the door and the frantic falling of little feet.

"I THREW UP AGAIN!" Screams and sobbing followed. So, stumbling around a bit bleary eyed I managed to get Aurora a drink of water, wash her hands and hair, and while she brushed her teeth grab everything off her bed and start the wash.

Fortunately, and amazingly, she did NOT vomit on sheepy. Although it was everywhere around him. So I grabbed him and some random clothes and readied Aurora to sleep in the Main floor with me for the rest of the evening (she woke us up around 2:30).

This is only the second time she's ever thrown up with me and it was entirely something she ate (I'm guessing Hawaiian Punch as the vomit looked familiar, and I'm sure if he stops by a third time we'll be on a first name basis). The good news was she wasn't as frightened as the first time, so she calmed down immediately and curled up in bed, waiting for me to finish up.. whereas the first time she cried forever and wouldn't let me go back to bed.

There were no other incidents during the night and we woke up around 8:30 this morning. I have been doing laundry since about 9 am straight. Don't ask me how but our laundry room was so buried in clothes, blankets, etc that I was positive it was going to try to kill me.

We are going to spend a relaxing evening with Samantha and then tomorrow I'm planning on heading to Brandy's house to clean.

Sometime this weekend, hopefully tomorrow evening, I am going to read more. I am 49 pages in and I absolutely adore Darwin. He is disbelievingly descriptive, but not in the suffocating manner of Hugo. He is cheerful and anecdotal and, obviously, a genius.

Reading List

So here is a list of books which I own (some for QUITE a while) that I want to read this year...
Voyage of the Beagle, Darwin
You Can't Go Home Again, Thomas Wolfe
Stone Garden, Molly Moynahan
Lilith, JR Salamanica
Mary, Called Magdalene, Margaret George
Pliny's Natural History
Pilgrim's Progress, John Bunyan
The General in His Labyrinth, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez
Plan B, Anne Lamott

As for books that I don't own that I want to read..
Anything by VS Naipaul : I have 3 of his books and I find his narration to be like a warm bath and hot tea
Milan Kundera : I have 4 of his books and he is a constant reminder that all life is simply perspective and our reaction to our perceived reality.
Mr. Darcy's Diary , Amanda Grange and of course - if I like it also
Mr. Knightley's Diary
Captain Wenworth's Diary
Edmund Bertram's Diary
Colonel Brandon's Diary
A Dance with Dragons (book 5 Song of Fire and Ice), George RR Martin (not released until OCTOBER!!)
Charles Dickens... The only thing I've ever read by Mr. Dickens is Great Expectations, which I adored. I keep wanting to buy his books but I want to find an older nice quality hardback so I keep putting it off.

my own pilgrimage

I was returned my copy of Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard (one of my favourite authors) yesterday. I haven't read it in years and absolutely adore it.

As I gushed about the content and expressed a wish to re-read it my mother quickly reminded me of my resolutions...

does a book not read in 5+ years count as being a re-read? apparently...

I was thinking more along the lines of Harry Potter (the series which I read twice just this year and have read 10+ times dwindling with the last 3 of course) or the Outlander series the first three books which I have read approximately 6 +times, the fourth and fifth twice and the sixth once, and Pride and Prejudice 7+, Chronicles of Narnia 4+...

So _soon_ to follow is my list of books (of which I OWN) on my reading list so I might check them off and hopefully inspire you to read or avoid as reviews are given...
and then a list of books which I do not currently own but desire to read.

I know you'll be waiting with bated breath.. of course, feel free to comment on book selection choices.

McCullough does Darcy.. or doesn't

oh blarg. I have adored McCullough (her Rome series was breathtaking) and am now quite fascinated that she could do something so terrible (see link below) to Darcy. I might even be tempted to read it. Perhaps. If there is enough liquor available in the house.

Pillows

The large owl is a super large piece of felt doubled over and hand stitched using embroidery thread around the top and two sides. I used contrasting felt or fabric for the other details.

The mini pillows will probably transform into three sided stitching much like the large owl above. Same concept just smaller size.

the cat pillow I think will translate well into a large pillow and will make the tail larger and will stuff it as well.

Other ideas for pillows for me to work on are appreciated. I'm going to do some fish for Aurora's mermaid grotto room, but am still sketching out the best ideas for the tail.
I may also attempt a large octopus since the cat's tail worked so well. Pictures will be posted as I get to the crafts

09 resolutions

1. blog my craft ideas and projects
2. find a pedal for my viking sewing machine
2b. relearn how to sew on the viking sewing machine
3. collect inexpensive storage bins for my laundry cupboards
3b. organize laundry room storage = fabric, crafts, projects, ready to give gifts, ready to sell crafts
4. find a doctor and get the right tests
5. catch up so i'm not advancing paycheck money
6. Get the living room ceiling painted
7. to read NEW books instead of just re-reading old loves
8. eat out LESS
9. Frame the picture Angel painted for me in high school (yes I really have been meaning to frame it for that long)
10. WRITE!
